You can also use Open Office Writer (the free equivalent of Word) to convert documents to PDF. I’ve been doing this for a couple of years and never had any problems with it.
Being open source, its also free, which is my favourite price!

Thank you, Terry, I didn’t know that Open Office has this feature. I’m currently using an online application, doc2pdf, which is free but requires an internet connection to work.
I was going to suggest OpenOffice, but someone beat me to it. Lovely how great minds think alike.
