Getting Search Engine Traffic To A Blog, Jake’s Style
If you read our yesterday’s article about the making money online competition featuring Jake & Jill, then you know by now Jill’s approach to get maximum search traffic to her posts.
Now we are going to see Jake’s method:
Step 1: Keyword Research
Jake knows that he shouldn’t go blind in writing those 3 articles about binoculars, and he wants to determine which are the best keywords to be used.
He uses SEOBook’s keyword research tool, which is free of charge and available online. These are the results he gets with this tool:

Jake thinks further that he might want to monetize these pages some day, so he investigates in Google AdWords, to see which keywords on the list have the highest bids. This can be done directly from SEOBook’s tool, by clicking on the correspondent links in the Google Traffic Estimator column (click on the first image in this post, in order to see the column)

As you can see for yourself, the bids for Kahles Binoculars are not that high, and the amount of clicks per day is 1. Jake is not happy, so he keeps on searching:

None of the keywords shows advertisers crowding to bid, so Jake decides to let this go, as it’s not part of this challenge anyway. When it will be monetization time, he will join an affiliate program which sells binoculars and get paid commissions for sales from his website.
He starts searching in Google, to see the level of competition for each keyword. For better productivity, Jake uses the SEO for Firefox add-on, which allows him to see a lot of details for each search result, such as PR, domain age, Yahoo backlinks etc.

Step 2: Jake’s Decision
He notices that for “apogee binoculars” there are only 1270 competing websites, the first result being a PR 4, so he makes his choice: he’s going to optimize his 3 posts for apogee binoculars. He prefers to proceed like this (choose one keyword and not more), because he thinks that he could obtain 2 results ranked in top ten (as you can see for the first website in the image above).
Jake will use social media to promote his pages, and he hopes that he’ll be able to rank in top 10 Google results within one week, then get 20% of the total daily clicks (estimated by SEO keyword tool to be about 1400). This means 280 visits per day. He thinks he’d beat Jill by using this strategy.
Is he right? Is his strategy better than Jill’s?
We will find out at the end of the challenge time. Meanwhile, you can have your say here, and you can bet on the winner. If your guess is right, you’ll get a surprise from us ![]()

Wow, that is very smart idea, we liked it.
Actually both Jake and Jill are doing some good research before writing their posts.
I’ll be interested in seeing who gets the better results.

oops, forgot to vote - I’m guessing Jake will have a bit more success as his focus is tighter and he’s targeting a single phrase to rank for.

Thank you for your vote. We shall see in the end who’s going to win. They both did a great job with the research, but they also forgot some things. We will have a detailed article on this, after the challenge ends.
